Popularized in the US by other brands from the region, it’s never a bad idea to pick up a bottle from vermouth di Torino. Antica Casa Vinicola Scarpa has been producing traditional wines in the Monferrato hills of southeast Piemonte since 1854, and are likely known for their wine production rather than vermouth. The category of Vermouth di Torino is defined as ‘an aromatised wine obtained in Piedmont using Italian wine only, with the addition of alcohol, flavoured mainly with Artemisia from Piedmont together with other herbs and spices.’ Scarpa has nice bright acidity up front and a strong backbone to provide structure. It works great in your favorite cocktails so make sure you put a Manhattan in your Friday plans.
