Description
  • The village of Yogana is located at the southern end of the Ejutla district of Oaxaca. Like all of his neighbors, Félix is a full-time farmer. Unlike many of his neighbors, Félix is also a part-time mezcalero, working with several species of agave that he plants between rows of seasonal crops, and distills on equipment unique to Ejutla that allow his spirits can reach proof in a single pass.

As people have done since they first came to the region, Felilx spends most of his time farming the rich, cambisol soil that covers the hills of Yogana, harvesting a bounty of agave, maize, squash, and beans. Felix works his agave into mezcal when he's not working his fields. On Fridays, he drives North to the Ocotlan Market, where he sells his mezcal and uses the money to purchase packaged goods that his wife and daughter sell out of their neighborhood store.
