Matsui Shuzou, producer of Kurayoshi, was founded in 1909 and is both a sake brewery and shochu distillery. They’re releasing some classic malt profiles, sourcing some stock from Scotland and blending with Japanese distillate and local water sources. Unpeated, this is a good introductory single malt for sipping and mixing highballs. Light, with notes of toasted nuts and hints of tangy wood spice on the finish.
