Description
This whisky is an US only release so it is something really special. The name Eifel comes from the low mountain range of western Germany that extends into eastern Belgium. If you are a WW2 history buff you will recognize Eifel since the Ardennes’ eastern border is in Eifel. Eifel Whisky was founded in 2008 by the German wine importer Stephan Mohr and wife Carolin. Stephan made the pivot from wine importer to whisky producer as a way to enjoy his “pre-retirement” years.
This 100% unpeated barley malt originating from close to the Eifel region and from a well reputed specialist maltster in Bavaria. It was distilled by Master Distiller Hendrik Viefhus in a traditional German style where the primary distillation was done in a column still followed by a second distillation in a pot still. It was aged in refilled Bordeaux red wine casks for 4 years and 4 more years in 1st and 2nd fill cream sherry casks.
Look for notes of cocoa powder, creamy chocolate pudding , frosted cereal, poached pear, cherry bark, almond and vanilla bean. On the palate toasted cereal, sherried cherries, poached pear, buckwheat honey, black pepper, dried apricot, sherry and jarred plums.
